Difference between Shipped on board and Received for shipment

What is the difference between ‘Received for shipment’ and ‘Shipped on Board’

Let us discuss, what is Received for shipment Bill of Lading?

As I have explained in detail in my previous article, the bill of lading is issued by carrier as a proof of receipt of goods from shipper. The earliest time of issuing bill of lading is on completion of customs formalities and receipt of original ‘let export order’ copy of shipping bill from customs house agent or from the shipper. If cargo is loaded in a CFS (dry port) away from sea port of loading, the multimodal transport carrier has to move the goods to port and load the goods to the ship. However the “Received for Shipment” bill of lading can be issued by carrier immediately on receipt of goods from shipper after completion of customs clearance.

Difference between ‘Shipped on board’ and ‘Received for shipment’
Normally the overseas buyer instruct the seller (exporter) through Letter of Credit, to send clean on board bill of lading. However, in some cases, as per the agreed terms between buyer and seller, seller mentions on letter of credit to accept ‘Received for shipment Bill of Lading’. If the Letter of credit just says ‘Bill of Lading’, ‘Received for shipment Bill of Lading’ is more than enough to negotiate buyer’s document, as bank can not find this as a ‘discrepancy’.

What is ‘Onboard Bill of Lading’?

Once after moving the goods on board the vessel , the carrier of goDifference between ‘Shipped on board’ and ‘Received for shipment’ 2ods certifies on such ‘on board’ by mentioning in Bill of Lading by mentioned as ‘SHIPPED ON BOARD’. Shipped on board means, the cargo has been loaded in to the vessel. Normally, carrier mentions the date of such on board of goods on the bill of lading below the word ‘Shipped on board’.  Also read How to get export order from foreign buyers?

VASIM: I am importing some goods from saudi arabia for first time & our term for goods is FOB does it mean that the goods will be on board (After clearing their custom formality by seller)??? & I do need only to appoint Freight Forwarder from Origin to destination port & clearing agents for my destination port?? Eagerly waiting your answer as this website is really very helpful.

Shivam: Dear Sir, I am seeking the clarification on the bill of lading in case of shipment from dry port. Can a shipping line issue a Received for shipment Bill of Lading after the cargo cleared from the custom and handed over the same for rail out the container for sea port. If the RFS Bill of Lading is issued in this case and forwarder hold and do not rail out the container. What will be responsibility of shipping line after issuing the RFS BL? Can shipping line charge the demurrage and detention in this case? Best Regards Shivam
